Miscalculations can cost lives, while there are special blue stars available for those that perform particularly well. Watching skiers slip and slide around on the ice in Carried Away can be a lot of fun and in many cases it is more entertaining than trying to solve the actual puzzles. Players are given all the tools they need to create ski lifts such as lift towers, platforms, logs, supports and wheels and have to fix out the best places to position these items.

Then it is time to sit back and discover whether their creation will bring success or disaster. This works on Louisa to put her 'under a wave,' where she thinks she is talking to Jack Agnew, but discovers it is really Jim Frarey. Indeed, as she had suspected all these years, reality can never be trusted to remain the same.

One consistent theme in the story is the fragile nature of human expectations. Louisa discovers that planning is almost useless, as circumstances will always intervene. Regardless of what Jack said in his letters, he meant all along to marry Grace if he returned to Carstairs. Because of Jack's accidental death, Louisa gets to know her future husband. Even her career as a librarian came about accidentally: Louisa happened to be in Carstairs when the former librarian passed away.

Another motif running through the tale is the difficulty of true communication. Almost all the central characters fail to make themselves known to those around them. Perhaps Munro is telling the reader that nothing is what it seems, and no one can be counted on to come through with what is planned or promised.

Though Jack does make good his promise to marry Grace, he leaves her a young widow with a daughter. Jim Frarey assumed Louisa to be an 'experienced' woman, he was surprised to find her still a virgin. And, of course, Louisa never expected to spend her entire life in rural Carstairs, running a piano factory. If you think too logically about the final episode in the story, you may be frustrated with the difficulty of pinning down the meaning. Did Jack Agnew really die? Or perhaps Louisa died earlier and this is her 'after life' experience.

And what about the group of Mennonites? Of these songs, "Snow Falls" was previously released on December 3, and "More Like Christmas" was previously released on November 25, Whereas the original "Snow Falls" had a fade out effect at the end, the I Saw Lights version uses an echo effect instead.
