As Catholics we must band together to rediscover our faith and share it with the world if we are to effectively counter a society whose moral culture seems to have no boundaries and a government whose rapidly extending reach threatens to extinguish the rights of people of faith to practice their religion witness the HHS mandate.
Now more than ever, vehicles like The Wanderer are needed for clarification and guidance on the issues of the day. God willing, our message will continue well into this century and beyond. RoosterCogburn 5. Wanderer has become one of my favorite books, a tale of a man who defined the saying, "All Who Wander are Not Lost.
The story of his early life is very interesting and in some cases, stranger than fiction. Hayden grew into a man who determined that there was more to life than being a movie star and chose to forfeit being an icon in order to live life on his own terms.
He was a flawed man who was quite candid about his failures and shortcomings, yet cared deeply for his children, the Wanderer and the promise of adventure. I didn't completely agree with all of Hayden's actions and decisions If you aren't familiar with sailing vessels, some of the terminology used in the book may be confusing.
I would encourage you to bear with it and continue reading, as you will be richly rewarded. This is an absolutely amazing read. I plan to read it once a year, it now holds a treasured place in my heart.
The book is definitely controversial still, and I have to be careful not to reflect my judgement on the man here. This is a book review, not a character review. The writing is unlike anything you see today, which is more the pity. Hayden is actually a talented writer. Not a genius, but talented. The reviews at the time compare him to many people, but not Hemingway which is odd to me, for that is what I saw as I read it. Regardless, it's a pleasant and engaging style.
His stories of life at sea are where the book truly shines. He was a born sailor, for sure. It was his calling and his vocation and his only peace. I don't believe that the ocean was the magic, however - Sterling Hayden was a danger-addict. He adored his time at war - at least when he was deployed - as much as he adored his life at sea.
He was a risk taker extraordinaire, which makes for a great read. In all other ways his life is a mixture of tragedy, moral cowardice, and a host of other less than ideal character traits, but this is what makes the book an interesting read. There are a few transcrption errors in the kindle version, but no big deal.

Pale y a recomendarle que no lo vendiera ya que no era bueno excitar las imaginaciones calenturientas de los vecinos del pueblo. Y estos pocos fueron silenciados o excomulgados.
