It was great to see another Leon Redbone release and it was even cooler to find out these were recordings made back in , three years before his debut album "On The Track" came out. A release many Leon fans have been waiting for. Just Leon and his guitar. The recording is a little rough in spots but that can be overlooked for the pleasure of hearing some great music.
I know there are other shows out there as I have a bootleg on Accord Records I bought in Cambridge in the early 80s that also contained some great live solo work. This is early Leon, before he had completely developed his outstanding vocal style and guitar approach , and not recorded very well. Nevertheless it's a Preview of Coming Attractions. He eventually developed a tremendous talent with an unique persona he's retired now and a wonderful contrast to all the monotonous sound-alike electric rock that was blaring all around us at that time.
Most interesting to me was the variety of long-lost songs he chose to sing so early and his developing guitar soundmust have been listening to a lot of Jimmie Rodgers and Rev. Gary Davis maybe Blind Blake and you couldn't find better inspiration.
Also his combining acoustic guitar with old jazz and blues, very effective and reminding me of what Jim Kweskin, Bob Gibson and Dave van Ronk, among others, were doing as well To me his best album was "Double Time," absolutely one of my favorites.
One person found this helpful. If you're a Leon Redbone fan you'll really enjoy these early recordings. Even if you've never heard of him, give it a listen, his work is timeless. Just bought a few of his CDS after he died. Some I like, some not so much - and a couple won't get out of my head for a few days. Good ol Leon Redbone! Fun recordings of early Leon Redbones work. They continued to appear regularly on radio in Ohio, and became a foursome when Jones was added to the group the following year. At this point they had changed their name to "The 4 Ink Spots". The sensation of the programme is the coloured quartette, the Four Ink Spots. Their natural instinct for hot rhythm is exemplified in their terrific single-string solo work and their beautifully balanced and exquisitely phrased vocalisms. They even throw in a bit of dancing to conclude their act, and the leading guitarist simultaneously plays and juggles with his instrument.
They first recorded for Victor Records in , but although the group was growing rapidly in popularity, their early record releases were not commercially successful. In , Daniels was replaced by a year-old singer from Baltimore, Bill Kenny , who signed on with the Ink Spots after winning first place in an amateur contest at Harlem's Savoy Ballroom.
Three years later, Kenny was credited for bringing the group to global success with his unusual high tenor ballad singing. This format was used primarily for ballads rather than the uptempo "jive" songs the group was used to performing. This format called for the tenor Kenny or Watson to sing the lead for one chorus followed by a chorus performed by bass singer Jones reciting the lyrics rather than singing them.
After a chorus of the "talking bass" the lead tenor sang the rest of the song until the end. The year also saw Kenny taking his first feature solo in Decca studios. Even though it got a good response, it wasn't very successful in terms of record sales and didn't reach the pop charts.
On January 12, , the Ink Spots entered Decca studios to record a ballad written by a young songwriter named Jack Lawrence. This ballad, "If I Didn't Care", was to be one of their biggest hits, selling over 19 million copies and becoming the 8th- best-selling single of all time. It was also the first recording by the group to reach the US Pop Charts.
From until the group's disbanding in , many of their songs employed this format. This was their first 1 hit on the US Pop Charts. Between the years and the Ink Spots landed well over 30 hits on the US Pop Charts with 18 of them on the topThe Longines Symphonette Society was a direct marketing company working out of Larchmont and, later, New Rochelle, New York.
